Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present moment, which involves maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them, without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. Mindfulness encompasses two key ingredients: awareness and acceptance. Awareness is the knowledge and ability to focus attention on one’s inner processes and experiences, such as the experience of the present moment. Acceptance is the ability to observe and accept—rather than judge or avoid—those streams of thought.

Mindfulness practices can help reduce stress, enhance performance, gain insight and awareness through observing our own mind, and increase our attention. Mindfulness-based treatment, including mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, can treat a range of physical and mental health issues and enhance everyday functioning and quality of life. Online counseling platforms like TalkToAngel can be helpful in addressing mental health concerns and providing access to resources for stress relief and mindfulness activities. Mindfulness meditation is one of the most common and effective mindfulness exercises that can be practiced to clear the mind from stressful thoughts and focus on breathing.
